Ode to the Salesman

Ode To The Salesman; Get Motivated Now

By Aster C. Lilly

I am a salesman. I earn my daily bread by the sound of my voice and the passion of my conviction.

I also have the toughest job ever.

I didn’t expect to be a salesman. I wanted to be an astronaut or a politician or a waiter. Sadly, I am a lowly salesman. Nobody likes me. My clients just purchase my goods to humor me. I might as well give up right now.

Are you kidding me? I love being a salesman! I’m not going to take that kind of disrespect from anyone!

Every day, I wake up, look at myself in the mirror, and say to myself: “Today is the day, you are going to make this happen!”

Every day, without fail, I take stock of the things that I have lived through. I listen to the little voice in my head that tells me “life is precious”. Take a few seconds and ask yourself, what did I live through? How much have I survived? What would my life be like if I wasn’t so tenacious?

When I leave from work, I walk with the smug strut of someone who has just struck a major deal. People respect what I have to say. People acknowledge that I am a leader. They look up to me. They trust my decisions. I am an important voice at this company.

I, the salesman, am the motor that keeps this business running. Without me, the boat would sink. That is why I make money here.

Without salespeople, the talented and dedicated men and women who actually SPEAK with clientele, there would be no economy. There would be no capitalism. The entire world would be a bunch of people making uninformed decisions. We’re the ones that make it happen.

We are the beginning of the revenue cycle. Everyone else in an office, management, accounting, human resources, performs their job AFTER we have done ours. It starts with us.

Speaking of human resources, what job is in the highest demand, always? Sales.
What is the highest-paying job requiring the least amount of education? Sales.
What word do job recruiters search for the most? Sales.

We are in demand, and we are here to stay.

I realize that the sales profession is a difficult one. Not everyone wants to hear your pitch. Some people will be downright angry about it.

Don’t let them frustrate you. Why? At the end of the day, you get PAID to throw your pitches. People who are angry with you probably are not receiving a paycheck. Who wins? I say you win, and you have the check to prove it.

Besides, you have to deal with hundreds of clients to find one that wants the product you are selling. The goal is to seek out those people who want what you present, and do a great job presenting it!

I have some clients that know me personally as a friend, not just as a salesman. I send them cards on holidays; they sometimes visit me in the office. We chat and have coffee.

If I had stopped at the MEAN clients, and not had a positive, friendly attitude, I would never have met the wonderful clientele I have today. Let me tell you, they are great people!

I had to talk to hundreds and hundreds of mean, angry, conniving clients, to find those rare few. I wouldn’t trade it those clients for the world.

So sales women, and sales men, the next time you feel sorry for yourself, realize that you make a big difference in the lives of the people around you.

Now, what are you waiting for? Go make some sales!
